Fighting Walnut Flies: Alternative Male Strategies

What do you do if you're really tiny???

Animal behaviorists are increasingly turning their attention to "alternative male strategies" -- ways of winning that don't require being the biggest or the best.

In this clip, an obviously tiny male isn't chased off by the much bigger male. Wing-flicks, poking, nothing seems to work. That little guy just simply refuses to fight! And, as a result, he gets to stay on the walnut.

To play the clip again, click the triangle at the lower left corner of the clip.
You can also step through the clip one frame at a time, using the triangles on the bottom right of the screen.
