Undergraduate students

Undergraduates are normally accepted into our group only if they have at least some computer programming experience, but feel free to contact us for advice while you go about getting such experience through a basic programming class. Undergraduates must be willing to commit to a minimum of 9 hours per week and more than a single semester: a larger commitment is preferred.

Graduate students

We are currently recruiting graduate students interested in any of our current areas of research, as well as graduate students whose own independent interests match well with the culture of the group. You can apply through the department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology here. You need to be accepted both by the department and by a faculty sponsor, so feel free to start a correspondence with me at any time. Alternatively, you can apply through a Graduate Interdisciplinary Program (GIDP) either in Applied Math or Statistics.

The situation regarding research assistantships currently looks rosy once students are done with rotations (EEB) or heavy coursework (Math/Statistics). Another source of funding for US citizens / permanent residents in the first two years is the genomics IGERT. One more option for US citizens and residents in years 2-3 is an NIH-funded training grant here at the University of Arizona on Computational and Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems.

Postdocs
No funded positions are currently available, and none are expected until January 2010 at the earliest. Applicants who bring their own money can of course study what and start when they like. Applications that do not clearly demonstrate familiarity with our research will not receive a response.

International applicants

We do not normally accept postdocs or graduate students unless we are able to meet you in person. Unfortunately, if you are unable to travel to the US for an interview for visa or other reasons, then I will generally not consider your application. If you are able to travel to Australia or Switzerland instead, feel free to write to me, I travel there sometimes and might be able to meet you there. In exceptional circumstances I may conduct interviews through a combination of email and phone, but it is generally more difficult to be admitted to the group in this way than it is via an in-person interview.
