RESEARCH
INTERESTS
Broadly, I am interested in the evolution of phenotypic diversity
in natural populations, particularly in relation to social behavior
and to the process of speciation. My dissertation research focused
on evolutionary and ecological relationships among four congeneric
species of fruit bats in Southeast Asia. In my first post doc
I used a combination of experimental, empirical and comparative
approaches to study molecular and neural mechanisms of sociality
and communication in New World rodents.
My current research is centered on speciation in house mice, with a focus on the genetic architecture and evolution of hybrid male sterility. I recently completed a study testing for a negative effect of the Y chromosome on hybrid spermatogenesis and am currently studying the causes and consequences of sex chromosome mis-expression in hybrid male germ cells. A long-term goal is to understand the contribution of population-level processes (e.g. selection, drift) to the process of speciation. To this end I plan to use a combination next generation expression phenotyping and classical QTL mapping to characterize the contribution of regulatory divergence to the origins of reproductive isolation in house mice, and to ask whether dysregulation of gene expression in hybrids is better explained by adaptive or neutral evolution within species.
