Bumblebees and Flowers

Think of a bumblebee foraging for nectar and pollen. The bee must decide whether or not to land on a particular flower. How does the bee know whether a flower has nectar or not?

You can consider the color of a flower as a signal. Some kinds of flowers have nectar, and some do not, but their colors may overlap, causing confusion in how to respond to the signal of a particular color.

The basics of signal detection theory are presented on the next page, in the form of a short slide show.

Coming soon: audio-only version of the slide show.
