Welcome to the Ornithology Mockingbird field study project
information and resource page. As the semester progresses, we will
post updates and information on the project, try to post
current locations of banded Mockingbirds on and around campus,
and post data collected by the class.
Current Tasks:
The current task is to locate Mockingbirds on campus. Details will be discussed in lab sections.
Resource Sites:
For a list of previously banded mockingbirds (banded in 2001), visit the
banded mockingbird page.
The Birds of North America paper on
The Northern Mockingbird (Mimus
polyglottos) in
Adobe (PDF) format.
Access by
entering user name and password (Given in class). Paper is stored in two
pieces:
Pages 1-14: Introduction, Species description, Distribution, Systematics,
Migration, Habitats, Feeding and Diet, Sounds and Vocal Behavior,
General Behavior (Territoriality, Mating, Social), Breeding (Nests, Nesting,
Eggs, Incubation, Parental Care, Development), Demography.
Pages 15-26: More Demography, Survival, Range and Population,
Conservation, Molting and Plumages, Morphological Measurements, References,
Appendix (geographic variation in body measures).
You might want to download both pieces for future reference.
Note: reading requires a copy of
Adobe Acrobat Reader, downloadable
for free.
Interactive Map of Campus: Allows sections of
campus to be enlarged, and features (buildings, sidewalks)
added or removed.
Vertical Aerial Photo of Campus. Not extremely detailed, but
allows a fair image for locating vegetation clusters. Would be useful
in conjunction with field notes for accurate drawings of habitat
and territories.
For information on the vegetation the
Campus Arboretum site
provides a detailed
vegetation
map of campus, with ability to
identify particular plants.
